Pituitary adenomas are tumors that occur in the pituitary gland.
Pituitary tumors are often treated with medicine to decrease the tumor size and alleviates symptoms. Treatment where the tumor is large can be with radiation therapy or surgery, and patients generally respond well. Surgery can often be preformed to remove the tumor without affecting other parts of the brain.
Surgery of pituitary tumors via the transsphenoidal route is a subset of skull base surgery. Physicians in this program collaborate with neuroendocrinologists in the care and management of these patients. Through CyberKnife® surgery, some of these tumors can be treated effectively in cases where traditional surgery is either inappropriate or will not adequately control the disease.
