Stephen Shelby Burks, M.D.

Shelby Burks grew up in Orlando, Florida. He attended Rollins College graduating with magna cum laude distinction in Biology. After college he was offered a scholarship at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he subsequently graduated with AOA honors distinction. As a first year medical student he developed an early interest in Neurosurgery.

His research interests include peripheral nerve repair, degenerative spinal column disease, minimally invasive and endoscopic spine surgery, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, and stem cell transplantation techniques, among others. He has three articles featured on the covers of JNS and JNS: Spine in April 2015, March 2016, and August 2018, respectively. In 2017 Shelby received the Kline award, sponsored by the AANS, to research animal models of peripheral nerve injury. He has over 30 peer-reviewed publications and numerous book chapters. Shelby plans to complete his enfolded fellowship in complex spine and peripheral nerve surgery in May of 2019. After graduation he plans to pursue a post-graduate fellowship in peripheral nerve surgery.

Shelby’s interests include film, basketball, Miami cultural events, healthcare policy, and travel.
