Research Opportunities

There are abundant and well-funded research opportunities at the Miami Project and the larger neuroscience community of the Medical Center.

The Miami Project
The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, a Center of Excellence at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, is a comprehensive scientific research program focused on spinal cord injury.  Housed in the Lois Pope LIFE Center, the work of The Miami Project’s team of basic and clinical scientists encompasses every aspect of neuroscience –from molecular and cellular biology to tissue transplantation and regeneration to physiology and functional studies with the ultimate goal of translation into the clinical arena. 

The Miami Project’s unique, integrated environment is an important resource for the neurosurgical resident.  Miami Project scientists, both basic and clinical, represent the cutting edge of neuroscience research and warmly encourage resident research participation during their neurosurgical training program.  Serving as a liaison between the clinical and research faculty of the Department, Dr. W. Dalton Dietrich, Scientific Director of The Miami Project and the Department’s Vice-Chairman of Research, assists each neurosurgical resident in planning and implementing their 1 or 2 year research rotation.  Residents may participate in laboratory projects ranging from CNS tissue transplantation and molecular biology to the clinical areas of rehabilitative engineering, MRI imaging, and the development of new therapies. 

Thanks in large part to the research at The Miami Project, the Department ranks third among departments of neurological surgery in funding from the National Institutes of Health.
