Jacques J. Morcos, M.D., F.R.C.S. (Eng), F.R.C.S. (Ed) specializes in the field of cerebrovascular and skullbase surgery. His neurosurgical training began at the famous National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen's Square and Maida Vale in London, England. He completed his neurosurgical residency at the University of Minnesota. He then completed two Fellowships; the first one under Dr Arthur Day in Cerebrovascular surgery at the University of Florida, and the second one under Dr Robert Spetzler in Cerebrovascular surgery and Skull base surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute. He joined the Faculty at the University of Miami's Department of Neurological Surgery in 1995. In view of his close involvement and team work with Neurootologists and Head and Neck Surgeons in Skull base Surgery, he also has a joint appointment in Otolaryngology.
Dr. Morcos treats all aspects of cerebrovascular disease, including aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations-AVMs, carotid stenosis, and intracranial atherosclerosis including bypass surgery. He also treats all aspects of brain tumor and skullbase surgery, including pituitary tumors, benign skull base tumors (such as meningiomas, schwannomas, acoustic neuromas and others), malignant skull base tumors (such as carcinomas and others), as well as gliomas and brain metastases. He also has an active practice in Gamma Knife radiosurgery. He is also currently obtaining further training in Endovascular surgery.
Dr. Morcos has numerous awards for his academic achievements, such as the Henry Arthur Dalziel Ferns Prize from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for being the most outstanding candidate in the primary F.R.C.S. examination and obtaining the highest marks over a period of 6 years. He also obtained the Peyton Society Award for ranking 1st in the written exam of the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is a member of several national and international neurosurgical organizations and was elected to the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. He is accredited by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He currently serves as Treasurer of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and is a committee member in the North American Skull Base Society. He is on the editorial board of several national and international journals. His bibliography includes more than 50 peer reviewed articles, book chapters, and reviews. He has made more than 230 national and international presentations.
In addition to his clinical commitments, Dr. Morcos runs a microsurgical anatomical dissection laboratory for education and research in anatomy of the brain and skullbase, and surgical approaches, as well as being involved in projects using virtual reality to study the brain, blood vessels and skull base.
Research Interests
Vascular neuroanatomy, skull base surgery approaches, virtual reality in microsurgical education and training
